Choosing the Correct Fire Extinguisher

The most common type of fire extinguisher is the Class A ‘water’ fire extinguisher. This is ideal for paper, wood or plastic fires. Class B fires involve flammable liquids such as petrol, paraffin or oil and should be extinguished using a class B ‘foam’ fire extinguisher. Class C fires involve flammable gases such as propane, methane, butane, etc and require a dry powder fire extinguisher. Burning metals such as aluminium swarf, titanium or manganese are designated Class D and require class D ‘powder’ fire extinguisher, of which there are several types. Finally are the class F fire which involve cooking fat and similar burning oils and require a ‘wet chemical’ fire extinguisher. Carbon dioxide CO2 extinguishers are ideal to be used to cover any electrical risks or Class B flammable liquid fires..
